Insulation Grants UK: Homeowner Rights, Eligibility & Next Steps
Rising energy bills and cold winters are a growing concern for UK homeowners - but you don’t have to face them alone. With insulation grants UK schemes, you can potentially tap into government backed funding to boost your home’s thermal performance at little or no upfront cost. Whether you’re looking to insulate your loft, cavity walls or underfloor, understanding your rights and eligibility is the first step. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through who qualifies, how to apply and what to expect, so you can make your home warmer, greener and more energy efficient
Schemes Offering Insulation Support
Eligibility Criteria
Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) & Council Tax Bands
You must live in a home with an EPC rating of D to G (England, Scotland & Wales).
In England your property must sit in Council Tax bands A to D; in Scotland and Wales, A to E.
Income, Benefits & Household Status
Low-income households often qualify if any occupant receives means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Housing Benefit or Child Tax Credit.
Pensioners (over 70) may qualify even outside these bands if they’re in fuel-poor or vulnerable circumstances.
Tenants, Landlords & Permission
Both homeowners and private tenants can apply, but tenants need written landlord permission before installation.
Social housing tenants are also eligible through their landlord or housing association.
Your Rights and Obligations
- You can apply for support through any obligated energy supplier, not just your current provider.
- Schemes are not pure grant schemes—energy suppliers decide which homes to fund and may ask for a contribution towards higher-cost measures.
- You have the right to a written quote detailing what’s included, any consumer contribution, and what’s excluded.
How to Apply
- Check your EPC rating via the EPC register and confirm your Council Tax band.
- Gather household income details, benefit documentation, and contact information (email/phone).
- Reach out to an obligated energy supplier or your local authority (for Warm Homes Local Grant).
- Complete their eligibility form or online check, giving permission to share your data.
- An assessor will visit to conduct a free retrofit assessment and recommend the insulation measure.
- Review the assessment report, confirm any contributions, and schedule installation.
What You’ll Need
- EPC certificate or energy report
- Council Tax band (A–D in England, A–E in Scotland/Wales)
- Proof of benefits or household income statement
